Miranda McKinney, Senior Accountant

Miranda McKinney, Senior Accountant

At Protenus, the values of Build Trust, Be Human, Live (Em)Powered and Onward Together are baked into all that we do. We continuously look for new and rewarding ways to integrate these values into our work, for the ultimate benefit of employees, customers, and our company.

For September, we are excited to announce that Miranda McKinney, Senior Accountant, who is a member of the Finance team at Protenus has been nominated for the Employee Values Spotlight for embodying our shared company values.

I couldn't be more proud to recognize Miranda for her hard work, especially over the past year. After we lost a team member during our busiest season, Miranda willingly stepped up and took on many additional responsibilities. With employees and customers across the United States, Miranda facilitates state tax returns in nearly all 50 states. She also oversees our prepaid, fixed assets and accrual accounts and plays a huge role in drafting our audited GAAP financials. Miranda reviews our contracts, ensures the accuracy of Salesforce and tracks monthly revenue. Thank you Miranda for your hard work and your contributions to the finance team!

Q&A with Miranda

What’s your role at Protenus, and what do you do?

My role at Protenus is Senior Accountant. Working in the finance department for a start-up I do a little bit of everything. Some of my responsibilities include: invoicing customers, overseeing the filing of sales tax returns, reviewing contracts, tracking monthly revenue, assisting with the filing of our federal and state tax returns, and assisting with our annual audit.

What do Protenus’ values mean to you?

Protenus’ values mean security to me. While that might sound like a silly answer, the values here allow me to know what is expected of me and my coworkers. In a world where everything is rapidly changing and there is a lot of uncertainty, having grounded values creates a sense of security within the workplace.

As Protenus celebrates their 10 year anniversary in 2024, what makes you most proud about working at Protenus?

The thing that makes me most proud about working at Protenus is that the company values are actually lived out. In 2023 I became a mom for the first time and coming back to work was extremely difficult and I definitely struggled with my workload at times. Instead of being met with harsh repercussions I was met with grace from my team. My team wholeheartedly embodied the value “Be Human” and for that I will be forever grateful.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

In true accountant fashion my answer is the spreadsheets. We have some pretty intricate spreadsheets for revenue and other reconciliations that, while they can be frustrating at times, they provide an entertaining challenge most days.

What has surprised you the most about working at Protenus?

The thing that has surprised me most about working at Protenus is that work life balance and respect can exist in the workplace. Coming from my previous job it was just ingrained in my brain that those things don’t matter and don’t exist. It’s a great thing to feel valued, respected, and encouraged at your place of work.
